Montie Rull Adkins, 72, passed away on January 3, 2023. He was born December 20, 1950 a son of the late Robert and Dorothy Adkins. In addition to his parents’ he was preceded in death by sisters Deanna Adkins, sister Dianna Adkins, brother Charles Adkins, brother Gene Adkins, sister Andria McSorley, brother Don Adkins and sister Carolyn Rickman.
He was a dedicated employee for the town of Ceredo, WV for over 30 years. Montie was a well respected member of the community, a beloved father and dear friend who will be truly missed.
He is survived by his former wife Connie Adkins, son Montie Adkins, daughter Christie (Chris) Taipale, grandchildren Patrick Rowe and Mason Taipale, brother Walt Adkins, sister Debbie (Ben) Short, brother Arnold (Barb) Adkins, brother Robert Adkins, sister Tammy Murphy, sister Cathie (Dave) Schumaker, brother Lonnie (Cynthia) Adkins, Sister Darline Adkins, girlfriend Anna and stepdaughter Kyleigh.

Larry Keith Young, 66, of Kenova, WV. passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at hie home. Graveside service will be conducted 12:00 P.M. Friday, January 13, 2023 at Hillcrest Cemetery. He was born July 17, 1956 in Rush, Ky. a son of the late Clyde Young, Sr. and the late Julia George Young. In addition to his parents’ he was preceded in a brother, Clyde Young, Jr. and sister, Ruby Gail Young. Survivors include two sisters and a brother-in-law Teresa Mannon (Jerry) and Brenda Young; sister-in-law Laura Young; one aunt and uncle Dottie and Junior Meade; several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great nephews. Brenda Joyce Dishman McCoy,74, of Ceredo, WV. passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2023. A graveside service will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Monday, January 9, 2023 by Pastor Rodney Dishman at the Maple Hill Cemetery. Brenda was born July 28, 1948 in Kenova, WV., a daughter of the late Paul and Eula Mae Brown Dishman. She was a graduate of Ceredo-Kenova High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Pamela Sue Hensley and a brother Larry Paul Dishman. She is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law Rodney Dale and Mary Dishman, Mark A. and Joyce Dishman and Timothy D, and Carmen Dishman and several nieces and nephews. Patricia Joyce Houchin Cornwell, 85, of Kenova, W.Va. widow of Robert “Tootles” Cornwell passed away Thursday, Januar 5, 2023 at her home. She was born April 10, 1937 in Ceredo, a daughter of the late, Vernon St. Elmo and Gladys Stewart Houchin. She was a graduate of C-K High School and later was a nurse at Huntington Hospital for many years. Pat leaves behind her four children, Dwayne (Diana) Cornwell of Proctorville, OH, Tim (Colleen) Cornwell, Steve (Elaine) Cornwell and Stephanie (Richard) Elkins all of Kenova, W. Va. Also surviving are her grandchildren, who called her Granny Pat, Brandon, Ashlee, Blayne, Eann, Timmy (Trish), Emmanuel, Brittany (Becka), and Nick (Allie); great grandchildren, Garrett, Madeline, Emelia, Jayla, Bryce, Evy, Barrett, Berkley and Mylah; and one brother, Jack Houchin of North Carolina. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Frank Houchin. Pat was an active member of Kenova United Methodist Church and was involved in many of the ministries of the church. She loved to cook and was part of the We Care Team, she liked quilting with the Busy Fingers quilting group, she sang in both the Chancel and Golden Chords Choirs, she enjoyed being part of the Mentor Program between KUMC and Kenova Elementary School and was a member of the Loyal Bible Sunday School Class. During the Fall Bazaar, we all enjoyed Pat’s famous apple dumplings. One of Pat’s many gifts was the gift of hospitality. Whenever she cooked for her own family she always made sure she also fed her widowed friends and anyone else who needed a hot meal. Pat will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2023 at Kenova United Methodist Church. The funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Andrew Tennant officiating. Mark Edward Maddox ,63, of Wayne County, WV. passed away Sunday, January 2, 2023. A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 7, 2023 at the Buffalo Valley Missionary Baptist Church. Mark was born January 9, 1959 in Huntington, WV., a son of the late Patricia Alice McCallister Maddox and Jim Maddox. He was a 1977 graduate of Buffalo High School. He was competitive and enjoyed winning, he was a multiple time state champion runner. He was a free-spirited individual that loved life and never met a stranger. Mark was the crazy uncle that the kids could never get enough of. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his brother Michael Maddox. In addition to his father, he is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law Gregg (Libbia), Jeff (Brenda) and Scott (Chaundra); sister-in-law Legh Ann Maddox and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family. Dossie Bowen Preece ,89, of Kenova, WV. went peacefully to her heavenly home surrounded by her loving family, Monday, January 2, 2023, at her home. Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 6, 2023 at the Park Circle Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Jeffers and Pastor Bill Napier. Interment will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery. Dossie was born May 10, 1933 in Job, Ky., a daughter of the late Charley and Polly Ann Johnson Bowen. She was a member of the Park Circle Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bill Joe Preece; siblings Albert, Luster, Freelon Bowen, Virgie Bowen, Oma Fannin, Margie Marcum, Martha Clay, Eldia Elkins and special friend Donald Staley. She is survived by her children Joe Preece (Bibi), Ruth Ann Hankins (Gary), Loretta Stambaugh (Keith), Shelia Stender (Melvin) and Bruce Preece (Keith); brother Leo Bowen (Mary); sister Fondalene Hay; sister-in-law Fay Blackburn; grandchildren Danny, Jason, Jessica, Andrea, Barbie, Amanda, Seth, Chris and Hannan; 17 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved deeply. Garnet Bryant (85) of Ceredo, WV passed away December 28, 2022 at Madison Park Healthcare with family by her side. She was born in 1937, the youngest daughter of the late Charles and Eva Holland. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert L. Bryant, four sisters and one brother; Reba Hatten, Nada McKenzie, Bertie Holland, Charlotte Ullom, and Charles Holland Jr. Garnet is survived by two sons, Steve (Beth) Bryant of Charleston, SC and Roger (Ellie) Bryant of Ceredo, WV. Bob and Garnet have 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Garnet is also survived by seven nieces, two nephews, as well as all their families, whom she loved dearly. Garnet graduated from Ceredo Kenova High School in 1957. She was an employee of Inland Mutual Insurance Company for twenty-two years where she was a statistical coding clerk. Garnet was a member of the Marcum Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Ceredo, WV. She loved the Lodge where she served as Worthy Matron and a presiding officer. Garnet wanted to express her gratitude to several dear friends who supported her during these last trying times, the late Rachel Lackey, Jeanie Stevens, and Juanita Kretzer. Funeral services will be held January 7, 2023, at 1:30pm at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova, WV. Jacqueline Renee Pelfrey Maggard ,54, of Kenova, WV. went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 29, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family who loved her the most. Jackie was born in Huntington, WV. a daughter of the late Paul and Sondra Clay Hewlett. Jackie enjoyed being surrounded by her friends and family, especially her best friend of many years, Tonja Eplion. Jackie is survived by her husband of 16 years, Eddie Maggard; one daughter Heather Pelfrey of Kenova and one son Shane Pelfrey of Kenova; one sister Susan Anderson; one granddaughter, who was the light of her life, Presley Pelfrey and grandson Bentley Clark and a special niece Taylor Anderson. Mitchell Grant Gibson, 39, beloved son of William “Butch” and Leslie Lynn Murphy Gibson of Lavalette, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2022. He was born October 29, 1983 in Huntington, W.Va. He was a graduate of Spring Valley High School Class of 2003. Mitch was employed by the Wayne County Board of Education as a day custodian at Ceredo Kenova Elementary School. He truly loved his job and the staff and children at the school. Always quick to share a smile, made him one of the favorites at CKES where he will be greatly missed. With his outgoing personality and love for music, he also enjoyed working as a DJ. Mitch was a good cook and liked cooking for his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mitchell and Roberta Gibson; his maternal grandparents, Grant and Eloise Murphy; two aunts, Brenda Rutherford and Beth Murphy; two uncles, John Gibson and Larry Rowe and his great grandmother, Virgie Gibson. In addition to his parents, Mitch is survived by three aunts, Joannie Wilks, Mary Ann Rowe and Pam Gibson; one uncle, Mike Murphy; several cousins and other family and a host of friends. Visitation will be Monday, January 2, 2023 at Rollins Funeral Home from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 7:30 p.m. with Pastor Scott Byard officiating.
