Our beloved Sonya Leigh Mayo Joseph, 50, of Ashland, KY went to be with the Lord Thursday, October 13, 2022 at King’s Daughters Medical Center. Funeral service will be conducted 5:00 P.M. Sunday, October 16, 2022 with Pastor Jay Ross officiating. Interment in the Mayo Family Cemetery will take place at a later date. Sonya was born November 8, 1971 in Huntington, WV, a daughter of Charles Edward and Dianna Lynn Massie Mayo. She was a graduate of Buffalo High School and was a former nurse at the Kingsbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Sonya loved spending time with her son Levi and family. She loved caring for her elderly patients, crafting, sewing, and cooking new recipes. While we are heartbroken that Sonya is no longer with us, we rejoice in the knowledge that she is in heaven. She was preceded in death by maternal grandfather Harold “Boots” Massie and paternal grandparents Charles Edward Mayo, Sr. and Alva Fairchild Mayo. Thelma Jean Lucas Vass, 90, of Barboursville, WV. passed away Monday, October 10, 2022 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Funeral service will be conducted 12:00 P.M. Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova with Pastor Mike Prater officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Valley Memory Gardens. Thelma was born May 25, 1932 to the late Elba and Lola Lucas. She was a retired secretary from Vinson High School and was a member of the Loudon United Methodist Church in Loudon, TN. and a former member of the Ceredo United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard Dyrl “Dick” Vass; four brothers and two sisters. Survivors include her two sons Keith Malcolm Vass (Debbie) and Kevin Joe Vass (Jami); one daughter Teresa Ann Boehle (Rick); two grandchildren Christopher Boehle (Amanda) and Katy Deliou (Pierre) and five great-grandchildren Marshall, Ellie, Owen, Valerie and Alexandre; two sisters Alma Workman (Arg); Opal Holman (Jim); two sister’s-in-law Joan Lucas and Betty Lucas and host of nieces and nephews. Genevieve Fern Workman Christian, 92 of Huntington, WV, passed peacefully Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at her residence. Funeral service will be conducted 1:00 P.M. She was born January 30, 1930 in Fort Gay, WV. a daughter of the late George French and Jean Thompson Workman. Fern was a former teacher and gifted artist. She was a member of the Ceredo Congregational Church and the Tri-State Arts Association. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Henry Rexford Christian. She is survived her precious daughter and son-in-law Tess Van Dijk (Arjan); two grandchildren Christian White (Marian) and Natasja Van Dijk (Fiance’ Brandon Washington); one great grandchild Ava Washington and a special friend Sandy Frazier Hammock. Evelyn Marie Lycan, age 95, of Kenova passed away peacefully with family and friends on September 27, 2022. Marie was born September 7, 1927 in Ceredo, W.Va. to the late Moody and Dora Lykins. She was preceded in death by her husband Dempsey Lycan and her grandson, Michael Carey; also her sisters, Peggy Wellman, Lois Jones, and Ethel Michaels. She is survived by her children, Debbie (Ray) Walker and Linda Cary (Larry Fulton) of Albuquerque, NM; one granddaughter, Rachel Carey, of Pensacola, FL; her sisters, Judy Fields, Georgia Smith, and Jean Jones; one brother, Richard “Buck” Lykins and a host of nieces and nephews; also a very special family friend, “third daughter”, Barbara Bellomy. Many thanks for the love and support to her caregivers and her wonderful neighbors, Jack Ferguson, and David and Linda Carver. Special thanks for the support and care from Hospice. She was a graduate of Buffalo High School and was retired from Kenova Elementary where she once was very active in the Kenova Elementary PTA and served as a past president of the organization. Marie was a member of Kenova United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Rollins Funeral Home. Jennifer “Sas” Frasher Caudill, 62, of Huntington, W.Va. passed away Monday, September 26, 2022 in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Friday, September 30, 2022 at the Ceredo Church of Christ, of which she was a member, with Minister Matthew McBrayer, officiating. Interment will follow in the Browning Family Cemetery. Sas was born October 15, 1959 in Huntington, WV daughter of the late Bobby Joe and Marilyn “Myrt” Dixon Frasher. She was a graduate of Buffalo High School. Sas was a longtime member of the Ceredo Volunteer Fire Department. She was active with the Ceredo Elementary PTO and a member of the board of directors of the Wayne County Youth Soccer League. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by an infant son Michael Derek Caudill; two brothers Robert and Timothy Frasher and grandparents Buck and Inez Dixon. Survivors include her beloved husband David Caudill; children William Alex Caudill, James Frasher Caudill and Kady Caudill; two grandchildren Kylar Caudill and Oaklynn Caudill and a host of nieces and nephews. Lisa Denise Worden, 61, of Kenova, WV. passed away Saturday, September 24, 2021 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Lisa was born February 25, 1961 in Huntington, W.Va. a daughter of Stella Byrd Black and the late Dennis Black. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by a sister Tammy Black, brother Steven Black, aunt Martha Legg, cousin Stephanie Black and grandmother Brady Black. She is survived by her beloved husband John Worden; three children Tiffany Black, Aaron Worden and Steven Worden and six grandchildren Hayden Vance, William Newsom, Trace Newsom, Ally Robertson, Phoenix Black and Isabella Worden. Bernard David Riggs, 81, of Huntington, WV, passed away at UK Medical Center and was united with his Savior Sunday, September 18, 2022. Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Interment will follow in Dock’s Creek Cemetery. Bernard was born November 11, 1940, in Kenova, WV, a son of the late Andrew Wayne and Reba Ball Riggs and raised in Happy Hollow outside Kenova. He was a graduate of Ferndale Elementary School and C-K High School, class of 1958, where he played on both the baseball and football teams. Bernard was a career-long employee and supervisor at Ashland Petroleum and retired from Marathon Petroleum in 2000. Bernard was a faithful man who loved the Lord. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, always caring for his family and others. An avid gardener, he loved being outside doing all the chores necessary to produce a big garden and beautiful plants and flowers. His greatest love though was taking care of and providing for his wife, parents and in laws, siblings, children, and grandchildren. His devotion for those closest to him cannot be replaced. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sisters Elaine Craycraft, Marsha Riggs, and Wilda Milam. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Nancy Lou Norman Riggs; son and daughter-in-law David Riggs (Tamela); daughter Lora Billups; four grandchildren Emily Billups, Andrew Riggs, Kathryn Riggs, and Jenna Billups; a brother-in-law Willie Milam; a sister-in-law Margaret Kizzee; two aunts Katie McCallister and Mary Ball; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and good neighbors. Janet L. Melnyk Cicenas, 76, of Catlettsburg, Ky. passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at King’s Daughters Medical Center. Funeral service will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 19, 2022 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ashland with Pastor Andrew Canon Garner officiating. Interment will follow in Dock’s Creek Cemetery. Janet was born June 25, 1946 in Gary, IN. a daughter of the late Walter and Dorothy Vander Meulen Melnyk. Janet was one to consider others before herself. She loved learning about people and was a second mother to all of her sons’ friends. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and discussing politics with any and all. Janet was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and her legacy lives on through all the lives she touched. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Carol Eberhardt. Kenneth E. Rutt, 68, of Kenova, W.Va. finished his course, Thursday, September 8, 2022 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at the First Baptist Church of Kenova, of which he was a member, with Pastor Kevin Hay officiating. Interment will follow in Dock’s Creek Cemetery with military rites being done by the American Legion Post 93 Honor Guard and Masonic rites by the Proctorville Lodge No. 550. Kenny was born October 14, 1953 in Piqua, OH. a son of the late Marvin M. and Bertha A. Myers Rutt. He was a retired truck driver and was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Robert Rutt. Survivors include his beloved wife Kelli L. Mabel Irene Perry Smith
Mabel Irene Perry Smith, 83, of Kenova, a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt, passed away peacefully at home on September 4, 2022. Born in Whitewood, VA, on July 7, 1939 to the late A.J. Perry and Thelma Tipton Perry, she spent most of her childhood in Kenova’s Park Circle, a neighborhood she remembered fondly throughout her life. She married her high-school sweetheart, Larry Jack Smith, who became her husband of 67 years. Mabel went on to earn an LPN and work as a private-duty nurse. She was a dedicated caregiver who showed an unparalleled level of compassion for her patients. She loved dancing, walking in Ritter Park, and trips to the beach, but most of all, she enjoyed spending time with family-immediate or extended-at little league or high school games, at reunions and family gatherings, at church, on the phone, and at home. She is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Debbie; her siblings, Albert, her twin sister, Barbara Morrone, David, and Jim; her granddaughter, Rachel Lavalley; and her nephew, David Allen Perry. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Lavalley (Mick) Benton; her sons, Ted (Patti Lakin), Mike, and Jad (Staci Provezis); her grandchildren, Jessica Smith (Mason), Joey (Laura) Smith, Michael Smith, Randy (Tonia) Lavalley, Ryan (Ben Hershey), Staz Smith-Provezis, and Zackary Smith; her great-grandchildren, Gavin Lavalley, and Maddie Majors (Mel); her siblings, Richard Perry and Juanita Staten; and her many nieces and nephews including, Cyndi Morrone Ranson, Jeanie Morrone Sullivan, Perry, Rick and Trey Morrone; Jim, John, Lenny and Rich Perry, Don Peslis; Jeanne Adkins, and Marci Franklin; Dana Ferrence, Jamie Hardwick, and Terri Hopkins; Beverly Morrison and Charlie and Chris Staten; Luanne Boyce and Ron Perry. Mabel attended the Ceredo Congregational Church and she was active in the Backpack Ministry. Funeral services will be held at Ceredo Congregational Church at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2022 with Pastor Marty Gute officiating.
