Effie M. Rakes

Effie M. Rakes, 81, of Kenova, W.Va. passed away Sunday January 4, 2026 at the Emogene Dolan Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. She was born October 26, 1944 in Genoa, W.Va. a daughter of the late Jay Pinson and Gracie Watts Pinson. Effie worked several places throughout her life but worked the longest for Cannonball’s Variety Store. She was a Christian and attended the Kenova Church of Christ when she could. She enjoyed playing bingo and bowling with friends over the years. You may not have known Effie’s name but you would often see her walking to the gazebo in downtown Kenova whenever the weather was nice. She would sit in the park for several hours watching people come and go and enjoying the sunshine. In addition to her parents Effie was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by brothers, Jessie Pinson of Wayne and Fred Sias, with whom she shared her home and one sister, Mary Copley. As she requested, the family will hold a Memorial Gathering from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday January 9, 2026 at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova. There will be no funeral service.
