Harold Lee Pemberton of Wayne County passed away Friday, July 5, 2024 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Funeral service will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, July, 9, 2024 at Rollins Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Page officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Valley Memory Gardens. He was the son of the late Richard Harry and Amy Jane Adkins Pemberton. He was a retired conductor from CSX and a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Buena Vista Masonic Lodge #60, York Rite and Scottish Rite whose members will conduct graveside rites and he was a member of the American Legion Post #93 whose Honor Guard will conduct military graveside rites. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Erma Ilene Pemberton; one brother Richard Pemberton and nephew Ray Gilkerson. He is survived by his two sons Michael (Sharon) Pemberton and Chris (Terri) Pemberton; three grandchildren Erin Pemberton, Jacynn Pemberton, and Ryann Pemberton; three step-grandchildren Nicholas Young, Mathew Young, and Jessica Young and one sister Donna Gilkerson. Clyde Bruce Rowe, 69, of Ceredo, passed away July 1 peacefully at home.

He is survived by his loving wife Jaylen Rowe; his daughters Lesli Forbes (Jesse) of Charleston and Casey Cipoletti (Jonathan) of Shreveport, La.; and his grandchildren Will (14) and Addie (13) Forbes and Luca (8) and Marco (5) Cipoletti. Bruce was also blessed to have joined Jaylen’s family and is survived by her children Dani Lynn Kelly (John) of Cincinnati, Ohio and Lakin McCann (Chris) of Mobile, Ala. and grandchildren Emma (11), Jayden (8) and Jaxon (9) Kelly and Finley (8), Judah (5) and Shepherd (3) McCann. Essie Ray Massie, 98, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, Monday July 1, 2024 at her residence. Funeral service will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Saturday, July 6, 2024 at Rollins Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Childers officiating. Interment will follow in Bean Cemetery. Essie was born June 17, 1926 in Prichard a daughter of the late Isreal and Exer Murray Ray. She was a member of the Centerville Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harold “Boots” Massie; granddaughter Sonya Mayo and granddaughter-in-law Rhonda Massie. Survivors include her children Roger (Shelby) Massie, Brenda (Jerry) Damron, Dianna (Charles) Mayo, Debbie (Greg) Adkins, Brian (Michelle) Massie, Brent (Linda) Massie and Jennifer (Jeff) Wellman; grandchildren Tom Massie, Philip Massie, Becky (John) Gray, Alicia (Mike) Patton, Tiffany Damron, Jacqueline (John) Ray, Tyler Mayo, Matthew (Annie) Adkins, Adam Adkins, Seth (Norma) Adkins, Hunter (Katie) Harrison, Hadley Massie, Brittany (Casey) Arthur, Melissa (Chris) Adkins, Lindsey Wellman and Shelby (Adam) Whitmore. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Mason, Justin, Sarah, Nathan, Grace, Nicholas, Alex, Tia, Hannah, Grace, Levi, Hallie, Sydnie, Parker, Caitlyn, Kinsley, Hailey, Luke, Brooks, Sophie, Cooper and Elliot; great-great-grandchildren Norman, Everleigh, Jasper and Madilyn; best friend turned caretaker Maxine Richmond; special friend Gloria McKenzie and dear friend Gayle Massie. RONALD A. WILLIS, 65, passed away June 28, 2024 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. He was born March 7, 1959 a son of the late Rev. Berman Willis, Jr. He is survived by his mother Gloria Jean Willis; a daughter Mindy Clark; a brother Berman “Pinky” Willis, III; two sisters Virginia “Jenny” Erwin and Ava Shirlette McCarty along with several nieces and nephews. Lorraine Maynard Vance, 78, of Huntington, WV., passed away Saturday, June 22, 2024 at Cabell-Huntington Hospital. Funeral service will be conducted 5:00 P.M. Thursday June 27, 2024 at Rollins Funeral Home. Lorraine was born May 7, 1946 in Pikeville, Ky. a daughter of the late Clem and Belvia Dalton Maynard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Dan Maynard and son-in-law Robert McClaskey. She is survived by her loving husband Glenn Vance; son Steven Vance; daughter Vicki McClaskey; grandchildren Brittani McClaskey, Hannah Prichard and Addison Vance; great-grandchildren Camryn Ervin and Stella Prichard; three sisters Norma Lavender, Estelle Johnson and Mazel Gibson and a host of nieces and nephews. Dr. Eleanor Hatten Stephens Terry, 92, of Ceredo-Kenova, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va. The celebration of her life will be conducted at Rollins Funeral Home on Sunday, June 16, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Dave Akers officiating. Burial will follow in Docks Creek Cemetery. She was born January 5, 1932, a daughter of the late Forrest William and Martha Plymale Hatten of Kenova. She received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Marshall College, the M.S.L.S. degree from the University of Kentucky, and a doctorate from Virginia Tech. She taught elementary and middle school students at Ceredo, W.Va., Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, Fort Knox, KY, Nellingen, Germany, and Misawa, Japan. She taught at Marshall University, taking an early retirement in 1989, after which she set up a medical library for Kings’ Daughters and Sons Medical Center from June 1989 to June 1990. She had applied to return to the Department of Defense and was sent to Japan for four years. After retiring from the Department of Defense, she returned home and joined the Saints Alive Choir where she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kenova, and eventually directed the Saints Alive Christian Senior Citizen’s Choir for 21 years, singing at nursing homes, retirement homes and senior citizens centers every week. The following are additional memberships, awards and honors: member of the first Ceredo Beautification Committee from 1995 to 1997, edited the Ceredo Newsletter, which later became the New Crescent; member of the Beta Phi Mu Science Honorary; the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honorary; Phi Kappa Delta Education Honorary; was awarded the Edgar Dale Memorial; received an award for service to Media/Librarianship of the State of West Virginia, which was presented at the AECT National Convention in Las Vegas, NV, 1986, and lastly was selected to be a member of Kenova Elementary’s Wall of Fame. She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Sheryl Stephens and her husband, Lannie Rowe, and Jan Terry; two sons, Dr. Michael Stephens, and Bruce Terry; three granddaughters, Kelsey Terry, Rachel Terry, and Barno Saturday; two grandsons, Mark Stephens and Seton Rowe and his wife, Jessica; three great-granddaughters, Athena, Aurora, and Addison, and one great-grandson, James. Carl Don Hatten, 94, of Kenova, WV, passed away Saturday June 8, 2024. He was born April 19, 1930 in Kenova the 7th of 12 children of Alva and Florence Burchett Hatten. He was a graduate of Ceredo-Kenova High School Class of 1948. Don attended WVU where he was also a cheerleader. He earned degrees from the University of Missouri and the University of Kansas. He was the head of the Social Work Department of Kansas City Memorial Hospital. He was baptized and attended the Presbyterian Church in Kenova and went to church camp with his friends. Don joined the Navy after high school and then was drafted by the Marine Medical Corp where he was a medic. He served his country with honor. In his later years Don was fond of saying he had lived a good life and that was true. He traveled the world and did and saw things many Wayne County men, of his age, were unable to do. He loved life and lived each day to the fullest. Don had great friends in both Kansas City and Ft. Myers where he lived for many years. He loved his family and he enjoyed coming home each year for the family reunion where he could visit with his siblings and tell tall tales to his nieces and nephews. Don was loved by his family and they looked forward to these visits. He returned to Kenova to be close to his brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Tiny Hatten whom he enjoyed visiting and going out to eat with each week. He is survived by his brother and several nieces and nephews and their families. Don will be fondly remembered by those who knew and loved him and will be greatly missed. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2024 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Kenova, WV with Pastor Andrew Tennant officiating. James Todd Dean, 54, of Independence, KY, formerly of Kenova, WV, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2024. He was born January 11, 1970 in Huntington, WV a son of the late Paul and June Pelfrey Dean. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Claude and Lillian Pelfrey and Dock and Mary Dean; and his mother-in-law, Sandra Kay Johnson. Todd graduated from Ceredo-Kenova High School. He was an avid football fan and especially loved the Dallas Cowboys. Todd was employed by SUN Behavioral Health. Survivors include his wife, Terri Lynn McCarley Dean; a son, Nathan (Erica) Stanley; a daughter, Lyndsai (Bobby) McClaskey; grandchildren, Elijah, Gracelynn and Abigail Raike and Charley Ann McClaskey; brothers, Jeff (Sue) Dean and John Dean; sisters, Jennifer (Jim) Marcum and Janice (Larry) Wellman; father-in-law, Chester D. Johnson; his doggies, Bella, Skippy and Sallee; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted, Saturday June 22, 2024 beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova, WV with Steve Blankenship officiating. Thomas Eugene Jarrell, 70, of Ceredo, WV., passed away Sunday, May 26, 2024 at his residence. Funeral service will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Wednesday May 29, 2024 at the First Baptist Church of Ceredo, of which he was a member, with Pastor Jeff Canterbury officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Tom was born February 28, 1954 in Huntington, WV. a son of the late Wilbur  Jarrell and the late Opal Zornes Jarrell Scarberry. Tom was a retired Huntington Police Officer and also retired from Calgon with thirty plus years of service. He also worked as a guard for the judges in the Federal system and was also a Mason. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Linda Null. He is survived by his wife Colleen VanHecke Jarrell; two daughters Jessica Mathis  (Chuck) and Amanda Buell (Craig); four grandchildren Aidan Napier, Macee Buell, Gunnar Mathis and Ellie Buell; niece Michelle McAnallan; nephew Brian Null and brother-in-law Whitey Null. Barbara Ellen Hay Rayburn, 80, of Kenova, WV., passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2024. Funeral service will be conducted 4:00 P.M. Friday May 24, 2024 at the Kenova United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, with Pastor Andrew Tennant officiating. Interment will follow in Dock’s Creek Cemetery. Barbara was born July 11, 1943 in Kenova, WV. a daughter of the late Kenneth and Geneva Thornhill Hay. Barbara was a longtime loved and respected Real Estate Agent in Ceredo and Kenova and the surrounding area. She was the owner and broker for 42 years of Rayburn Realty. Barbara was instrumental in starting the first Laura League Girls Softball in C-K. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband John Rayburn, Sr. and three siblings Emmons Hay, Kenny Hay and Judy Bess. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law Debby Moore and Deidre (Scott) Farley; a son and daughter-in-law John R. (Ann) Rayburn, Jr.; grandchildren Jenny (Jared) Stephens, Monica Rayburn, Zachary Moore, Zane Moore (Liz Auvil), John R. Rayburn, III and Beau Farley; great-grandchildren Ty Stephens, Marley Moore, Jaxon Stephens, Clark Moore and Willow Moore. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law Joyce Davis and Linda Hay and numerous other family and friends. The family would like to offer a special thank you to her caregivers Marla Bonecutter and Sheila Mayo. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to KUMC or Hospice of Huntington.
