Memories of my papaw Jack, by David Dalton Varney.
Around 8 o’clock on Tuesday, September 17th, Jack Webb was called home to rest in the arms of the Lord. Greeting him there was his daughter Cassie, his brother Alvis, his sisters Mary and Judy, and his parents, Cullie and Vina Webb.
Jack was born in Wayne, West Virginia, and spent the earliest parts of his life in Hazel Park, Michigan. He worked his entire life in auto mechanics but was also passionate about the outdoors – gardening, landscaping, and tending to the birds who called his backyard home.
In recent years, his age and health prevented him from partaking in his favorite outdoor hobbies. Now, free from age and health concerns, he can once again, joyfully and vigorously, dedicate himself to these things. In service to the Lord, Jack will assure that the lush and abundant gardens that await us all in the Kingdom of Heaven will be lively and pristine. We should expect that the lush and abundant greenery of the Lord’s kingdom will be teeming with life when we are reunited with him in the life to come. The bushes will be trimmed, grass will be freshly cut, flowers will be watered, and all the animals are sure to be well-fed.
Anyone who knew Jack was sure to be familiar with the fact that he always kept his pockets stocked with his favorite candy, always offering candy to friends, family, and strangers alike. We can be sure that the candies, fruits, and delicacies he enjoys now, and await us in the life to come, are sweeter and more delightful than any delicacy we can find here on Earth. At the gates of Heaven, we are sure to find Jack, greeting us with hands outstretched, with an offering of candy in his hands. We will find that he has traded his treasured little red truck here on Earth, with the wings of an angel.
Jack was always happiest when surrounded by those he loved – his wife Evelyn, children Kim and Cassie, grandchildren, Alexia and Dalton, and son-in-law Brian. Every Sunday he would take his place at the head of the table as the family gathered for dinner together. Once more, we will meet him at a table in paradise, only this time, with Jesus at the head, when we are called to dine with him and partake in the great banquet that the Lord has prepared for us there.
He will be remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, and neighbor who lived life with profound peace, joy, grace, and humility in his heart. He loved to gather with his family, friends, and church family, and while we may not be able to see him, he is here with us, smiling and happy that we all once again, gathered together, knowing that we will all see each once again in the Kingdom of the Lord.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2024 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Rollins Funeral Home, Kenova WV. Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm at Ebenezer Baptist Church also in Kenova. Online condolences can be made at rollinsfh.com. Rollins Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Evelyn, Kim, and family:
I was sorry to learn of Jack’s passing. He was always a good neighbor and friend. May God comfort you with the peace that passes all understanding.
