Verna Ann (Frye) Kiser, 82, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, formerly of Kenova, West Virginia, passed from this life on December 12th, following a brief battle with cancer. A disease she fought with grace and kindness, and above all else, with a peace born of faith and a certainty that life is eternal.
Ann grew up in Harts, West Virginia, and considered herself immensely blessed to have been born into a large, loving family which included both of her parents and the five siblings she adored throughout her entire life. She often expressed gratitude for a long, full life that was filled with many friends, a close-knit family, and until her final weeks, good health. Ann will be remembered as a soft-spoken, unassuming person who never turned away someone in need, had a great sense of humor, always smiled, and who never met a stranger. If you only even encountered her once, she would know your life story by the time you parted.
Ann had a servants heart. She quietly devoted countless hours helping others, especially the elderly. As would be her wish, it is impossible to know the true impact and extent of her generosity. Ann was a joyful person and enjoyed many things, including the Tuesday night music group that met at the old Ceredo Elementary, visiting with her work family at DATS, watching movies, shopping, giving gifts, and more than anything else….talking. She was especially fond of her weekly (sometimes daily) phone calls with nieces Sheila and Tina, sister-in-law Joann, and nephew Eddie. Regardless of who was on the other end of the line, she ended nearly every conversation with “I love you.”
Ann was proceeded in death by her husband of forty-nine years in 2011 (Ralph Douglas Kiser), her parents Ed and Ruth Frye, brothers Gilbert, Allen, and Bill Frye, sister Birdie Skaggs, sister’s-in law Carol Gibson and Joann Frye, nephew Brennan Frye, and longtime friend, Clarice Linkous. She was also proceeded in death by six of her husband’s brothers, two of his sisters and five of their sisters-in-law.
Ann’s life had a wide reach and she is survived by many who know they were blessed because she was in theirs, including daughters Donna Kiser-Salmons (Ronnie), Sandra (Ric) Griffith and their family (Ben, Jenni, Avery & Griffyn Butler, Y Alexis, Bryan, Jackson & Jayden Daugherty, and Heidi, Dominic and Aliyana Romero), her baby sister Char (Jeff) Brauer, brothers-in-law Jerry Skaggs and Marshall Kiser, sisters-in-law Anne (Dennis ) Tabor and Joann Kiser, nieces Cheryl (Rob) Grant, Angie Frye, Kim Dean, Eddie Frye, Jason (Gina) Lewis, Joey (Crystal) Skaggs, Jerry Allen (Melissa Skaggs) and Stephanie (Bryan) Sabbee.
She is also survived by dozens of her husband’s nephews and nieces, several great-nieces and nephews, and special friends John Debord, Barb Bellomy & Marti Debord.
Ann’s family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the outpouring of love and support and to the staff of Kings Daughters Hospital and Hospice of Huntington. Visitation will take place from 4-7 on Sunday, December 15th, at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova, West Virginia. A service will take place the following morning at 11 am, also at Rollins. To honor Ann’s gentle, loving spirt, In lieu of flowers her family requests donations be made to your favorite charity, or to someone in need.
